Mandrake Root Candle

£22.00

The Mandrake has a centuries long history and association with witchcraft, myth and magical practice. In the Middle Ages it was considered one of the key ingredients of a witches ‘flying ointment,’ and was frequently used in spells, rituals and potions. Sometimes referred to as ‘satan’s apple,’ ‘sorcerers root,’ or ‘witches mannikin,’ the mandrake has indeed become a much sought after magical herb.

Often the roots have a startling resemblance to the human body, with tubors forming the shape of a torso and limbs, and sometimes even a face. In German folklore it is known as the ‘Little Man of the Gallows,’ due to the belief that mandrakes were born from the ground beneath the drippings of a hanged man.

According to medieval legend It was thought that a mandrake would scream when plucked from the ground, and that to hear the scream would render certain death upon the listener. Yet the properties of the root were very much desired, which led to the ritual of using dogs to pull them free. To do this a poor dog would be kept sufficiently hungry before being tied to the stem of the plant. Food would then be thrown to him, but a little out of reach, meaning the dog would have to tug and strain to get to it. This would in turn pull the mandrake from the earth, with the dog sadly dying upon hearing the piercing scream.

Luckily, the Mandrake candle is a much safer scream-free experience. Rather than howling your house down this little mandrake baby promises to gently scent your home with a lovely warm and welcoming aroma.
